Excellent - thanks you guys! Now it's my turn to decide on one and go get it. I missed an excellent picture opportunity yesterday of N cutting the lawn ... with scissors. I guess waist-high weeds are too tall for him.

We recently purchased a new Fujifilm Finepix S5200, and so far it's nice. We wanted an automatic digital with an SLR look and feel, plus at least a 10x optical zoom. These are the ones we researched:

Canon Powershot S2 IS
Sony Cyber Shot DSC-H2
Fujifilm Finepix S5200
Fujifilm Finepix S6000FD
Canon Powershot S3 IS
Fujifilm Finepix S9000

We used Consumer Reports and www.steves-digicams.com to research the cameras.

We have a Nikon D50 which is a digital SLR. I am not sure if you want a SLR or a point and shoot. We have overall been very happy with the camera. Sam uses it in automatic mode and I have learned how to use the manual modes. We are currently having an issue however and having to send it back under warranty. Nikon has since come out with the D40 which I believe may be better and cheaper than ours.

I have a canon powershot a95, and I like it. One fairly unique feature it has is the rotating LCD screen. This allows you to flip the display 180 and take a picture of yourself... OR, I often use it for shooting above my head. Like if your at a parade and people are standing in front of you, you just tilt the LCD down, put the camera up and snap a way to get a good picture uninhibited by the back of people's heads.

I just recommended a different series of the Canon powershot to my sister-in-law. Several similarites among the different lines, but I recommended the other one because it had the same memory cards as their previous one. So far they're pleased... but they just bought it this week! :)

So, my preference leans to Canon because it's what I know. I've been quite satisfied with the 3 cameras I've had from them. However, that's not to say there isn't other excellent stuff out there! I'll leave that for someone else to suggest.
