Book Meme

posted February 6th, 2008 by Shannon

My friend Jen had this book meme posted on her blog. Here are the rules:
1. Pick up the nearest book (of at least 123 pages.)
2. Open the book to page 123.
3. Find the fifth sentence.
4. Post the next three sentences.
5. Tag five people.

Our current read-aloud from Sonlight was the closest book:

“Oh, no;” returned the soldier; “I have never seen him. But I spoke to him as he sat behind his screen, and gave him your message. He says he will grant you an audience, if you so desire; but each one of you must enter his presence alone, and he will admit but one each day.”
– The Wonderful Wizard of Oz by L. Frank Baum

Who do I tag?
Jen cheated on this part, so I am too. I’m not going to tag anybody. If you want to participate, go right ahead! Just leave me a comment so I know to go take a look. Thanks!

  1. Hey! I was just talking about you – saying nice things, of course. What else is there to say! 🙂 Thanks for playing along! What a good quote! Hugs!

  2. Well, I have several books to choose from – the Bible, an Elementary Statistics book, These Strange Ashes by Elizabeth Elliot and 2 gardening books that were recently given to me. Technically, the gardening book is closest. So, here are the three sentences….
“I’m a hands-on, down-in-the-dirt gardener, and I love the feel of earth between my fingers and under my fingernails. But I don’t like taking soil to the dinner table. I tried hand creams, gloves and nail brushes before I finally found something that works: denture cleaning tablets.”
So, there it is — hope you enjoyed it — guess I need to go get some denture cleaning tablets…..

  3. Since I am in Dumas, MY closest book is an “ebook” that I purchased last week. It is called Cancer Free by Bill Henderson.

    The requested 3 sentences are…

“In Mexico, the political system is such that the government credits and inspects
clinics and hospitals, but does not attempt to get in between the doctor and
patient. In short, it leaves doctoring to doctors. This means they are free to use
treatments from countries around the world which have proven successful in battling cancer.”

No, I do not have cancer although my mother died of cancer and I have had personal friends who did or are currently battling this disease.

I am fascinated with information like this on preventive medicine and gentle, non-toxic treatments that are available to treat cancer other than the conventional surgery, chemo and radiation.

I think everyone should read some of this type of information / research and then decide what you do and don’t believe before you or a loved one are facing a battle like this. It is very hard to make huge decisions about treatments when you are in the midst of the battle.

Well, the book meme didn’t actually ask for all of this “free information” so I will end my post now!!! 🙂

  4. I love internet culture! Here’s my meme:

  5. The book lying right next to me on my desk is “The No. 1 Ladies’ Detective Agency” by Alexander McCall Smith. The 5th, 6th and 7th sentence on page 123 happens to be a wonderful sequence in this wonderful book in a wonderful series of books:

“Somewhere, far away, there was a grunting sound, but she was not afraid, and she walked out of the hut to stand underneath the sky and draw the dry, clear air into her lungs. And she thought: I am just a tiny person in Africa, but there is a place for me, and for everybody, to sit down on this earth and touch it and call it their own. She waited for another thought to come, but none did, and so she crept back into the hut and the warmth of the blankets on her sleeping mat.”

  6. Hi Hilde – I visited your blog a few times when Christy was over your way. You have a very cute son! Thanks for dropping by!
