Usually we meet friends at the zoo but this time we went solo. It was a nice. I was able to talk more with the kids (and now that Nathan is talking a lot more, that was really fun) and they had more say in what we did and saw. We had a nice leisurely lunch in front of the elephants, who were particularly active today. We saw several exhibits that we haven’t taken the time to look at in a while. It was just overall a particularly nice morning with the kids. We only had a couple minor mishaps.

One was when Nathan was one rung shy of climbing in with the rhinos. Whoever designed that retaining wall never had a climbing toddler! It’s a horrible design. The bottom half is about a foot and a half of concrete, which is low enough for my talented son to quickly hop on top of as if it were a step stool. Then the bars on top are HORIZONTAL! My son sees that wall and his brain says “Cool, a LADDER!” Let it be know that moms run VERY fast when the situation calls for it.

The second mishap was Emily bumping into a bee. I saw the bee fly towards her face, heard her scream, and saw the bee as he was falling to the ground. There is definitely a spot where he “got her” but I don’t think it was a full sting. (Is that possible?) Nothing that a few pieces of ice and 5 minutes of loud crying couldn’t solve. It never swelled up and all we can see is a small dot (almost like a pimple) on the side of her nose where she says he stung her. It could have been a lot worse. It’s pretty frighting to see a bee, hear your daughter scream, then see her rubbing her eye. Especially for a mom that was stung on the eyelid as a child – and has the lovely swelled-up-eye pictures to prove it.

In other news, Emily designed her own lunch this week. She explained it to me in the car on the way home from an event Tuesday morning The recipe is as follows:

Begin with one tortilla.

Place frozen veggies (slightly warmed in the microwave) in the middle of the tortilla.

Place hamburger pickles on top of the frozen veggies.

Place banana slices on top of the pickles.

Roll the tortilla up, heat it in the microwave, and then eat it.

I think she was making it up as she went along, but we did have all the ingredients – SO I let her make it. Miss Picky-Eater herself ate every last bite. I don’t get it.

Interstingly enough, it was as the pickle juice and banana aromas were mixing together in my nasal cavity that I realized I was not feeling so hot. About an hour later George came home early from work not feeling so well either. (If you’ve read George’s previous blog entry, you know what happened after that.)

The kids and I headed out to the zoo today.
