For those who didn’t call…

posted June 1st, 2007 by Shannon

My mom and sister called to get the scoop on the new pet. Here’s what they got when they asked E about her pet (mainly wanting to know what kind of pet we now owned):

“Well, her first name is Goldie and her middle name is what she is. And her last name, well, we adopted her, so her last name is the same as our last name.”

“She’s a, well, I don’t remember what she is called.”

“*Mom, what kind of animal is she again?*”

Silly girl.

Here’s the real scoop: I received an email yesterday from a family that was moving out of the area. They could not take their pet on their journey so they were giving her and her supplies away for free. I halfway jokingly mentioned it to G and he took me halfway serious. We decided it would be good for the kids to have a pet and that’s how Goldie G. [insert last name here] came to join our family.

And the G. stands for …. Gerbil. Yep, we got a gerbil. N really wanted her first name to be Gerbil, but finally agreed to let that be her middle name instead. The kids are excited about her. Unfortunately, I think the other family ignored her these past few months while their house has been on the market and Goldie (previously known as Squirmy) was banished to the garage. For whatever reason, Goldie is quite skittish around us. I have not been able to pick her up yet and she runs away anytime the kids try to pet/touch her. She did finally grab a couple sunflower seeds out of my hand this afternoon. Maybe she’s warming up to us….or maybe she was just *really* hungry.

Wanna see a picture of my pet gerbil? Meet Sneakers (last picture in the post).

  1. Really funny – there is a family here who is moving away and needs to find a new home for their Golden Retriever . . . and I’d be lieing if I said we hadn’t thought about taking it in. I was cracking up thinking you might’ve just done the thing we’ve thought about! 🙂

  2. Well, I was hoping it was a dog and Hooligan would have a cousin that she would actually meet since my brother’s dog Trent is located half the country away.

I hope you enjoy your gerbil. I had one in my science classroom once and it was not my favorite animal. Start now teaching your kids to clean out the cage. It can be kind of gross.
