More Birthdays

(That would be birthdays, not birth days.) Yesterday was George’s birthday. We thought we might be busy with a new baby so we didn’t have a whole lot planned. Bummer for him. He did get to hunt for some presents that were hidden by the kiddos and we took a little family outing to the minature golf place near our house. I let him win the golf game by 2 shots, but Emily was not too far behind either one of us. Nathan…well, let’s just say it’s a good thing there was a 5-shot limit on each hole or we would have been there a while longer.

And today is my other sister’s birthday. I had planned to post a birthday picture for her as well. My original plan was to let Baby Peanut pose for the photo, but Peanut apparently was not made aware of this. So we went with Plan B. Happy Birthday, Britney!

And a Half

One and a half weeks until our books are due back at the library.

Two and a half months since we moved into our new house.

Three and a half minutes alone with markers and our son will be covered from head to toe.

Four and a half days until my next midwife appointment, which I am hoping to cancel.

Five and a half years ago today our first kiddo was born.

Happy Half-Birthday Pumpkin!

Wait, Wait, Wait….

posted August 7th, 2006 by Shannon

“…What can we do while we wait?” (Sung by Joe as he and Blue played The Waiting Game — that would be from Blue’s Clues for those without toddlers.) That’s a very good question as I’m not really sure WHAT to do while we wait for the arrival of Baby Peanut. But I can take some time and answer a few FAQ’s while we wait:

“Have you had that baby yet?” Uh, no – rest assured we will post here when baby makes his/her arrival!

“How are you feeling?” I am feeling good. I am, of course, tired of the heat, tired of being unable to find a comfortable sleeping position, tired of consuming so much water, and tired of my shirts getting smaller and smaller. However, someone asked me last week if I was just miserable and it caught me offguard. A quick read through the morning paper is enough to remind me that I’m really in a very comfortable spot. So a bit uncomfortable now and then but no major complaints.

“Any idea when this baby is coming?” HA! It will hopefully be sometime in the next 2 weeks. Other than that, we have no idea. I did have quite a few contractions last Wednesday night and then throughout the day on Thursday but they apparently did their job for the moment and then decided to take a break for a while.

“Have you picked out names yet?” No, but that’s a funny one. We appear to work best under pressure when it comes to naming our children. We have finally talked about it and we do have a short list for both boy and girl names. But you’ll have to wait until Peanut’s arrival to know the official name (we likely won’t decide on the final name until then anyway).

“How are the other kids doing?” E and N have been a big help getting things ready and they are very excited about their new baby. For a long time E wanted a little sister and N wanted a little brother, however E discovered that she could be guaranteed to get what she wanted if she instead said she wanted a boy OR a girl. I think N still wants a boy, but when asked what he would do with a baby sister he responds very cutely with “wuv it”. They probably don’t understand just how much their lives are about to change, but they are very excited for now.

And so are we – it’s just hard to wait sometimes. But that’s what we’re doing…

for all my mac friends…

Ran across this quote the other day on one of the geek sites I found myself on:

“They say that when you play a Microsoft CD backwards you can hear demonic voices… But that’s nothing – When you play it forwards it installs Windows.”

The trouble with using a midwife…

posted July 25th, 2006 by Shannon

…is that they know EVERYTHING! It’s just not fair! With the first two kiddos, this was a typical conversation I had with my doctor at each visit:

Doctor: “How’s your nutrition? Are you eating well?”

Me: “Pretty good. At least I’m trying to.”

Doctor: “Well, keep working on it. Nutrition is important to your growing baby. See you next month.”

But, NO, not with a midwife! Every visit I have to pee on this little strip and every time they tell me some part of my diet that I need to work on. (Usually it’s that I need more protein. No matter how much protein I eat the strip still says I need more.) Well, today my midwife KNEW I had had ice cream last night. I haven’t had ice cream in a WHOLE month but yet I HAD to go and eat some last night. Well, I got caught. And according to the strip, my body didn’t handle it well – at all. So until Baby Peanut arrives, I get no more ice cream. Ughh! (But seriously, I love being under the care of a midwife, even when she tells me no more ice cream.)

July 24, 2006 – Part 2

A very sweet and special lady from my hometown died today. She was the mother of a friend and a friend of my mother’s. It was not unexpected, but it is still hard for me to process right now. Maybe because I’m physically distanced from it. Maybe because I just haven’t had that much experience dealing with death. Maybe because I just simply cannot imagine life without my own mother. I hurt for those closer to her. I don’t have much else to say, but I didn’t want to ignore it. It’s easy to blog about the fun things, but I think it’s important for me to blog about the tough things too.

It’s my little sister’s birthday today, but I’m sure she doesn’t want me to call her right now. It’s just after 2pm for me, which means it’s just after 4am in South Korea. Therefore, I am technically a whole day late in wishing her a happy birthday. (Shame on me!) So I’ll just do the next best thing…

Outages

posted July 20th, 2006 by Shannon

This past week we had had an hour long electrical outage, a DAY long internet outage, and a day and a HALF air conditioner outage. (OK, technically the AC still came on and blew air, the air just wasn’t cool.) During all 3 I found myself thinking “Good grief – what am I supposed to do without electricity…or the internet…or a working AC?”

I know there are places in this world that have electrical outages on a regular basis. And plenty of places that could only dream of reliable internet access or air conditioning. I really should be more thankful that we don’t have these kinds of outages on most days. But it sure did get hot for this pregnant gal in her 37th-ish week!

*** Special thanks to Uncle Carey for coming over and helping us fix the AC!! We’re much cooler now.***

Thank you

Sometimes it takes the words of a child for us to realize how much we take for granted. Nathan’s prayer at dinner last night:

Dear God,
Thank you for this day. Thank you for Mommy. Thank you for Daddy. Thank you for Emily. Thank you for Nathan. Thank you that I have a head. Thank you for [about 20 other things before the prayer was over].
Amen

Yes, God, thank you that I have a head too. Life wouldn’t quite be the same without one, would it?

Kidless Week

posted July 9th, 2006 by Shannon

We spent the last week without our precious kiddos while they played at Gran and Gramps’ house. They spent their time making playdough, fishing with Gramps, taking walks to the park, picking veggies from Gramps’ garden, having a picnic lunch in the playhouse, decorating their bike/trike and riding it in the July 4th parade. I can’t say that we had that much fun, although it was a good (productive) week. George’s workspace in the garage is now usable. I now have a shelf in the laundry room. I went through the top drawer of our filing cabinet and got it organized (and threw a LOT of stuff away in the process.) We had several discussions on money and our budget – not exactly the most fun thing to talk about, but definitely important now that George is self-employed.

We’re glad to have them back now. Emily got excited yesterday when I told her mommy and daddy worked hard and got a lot done last week so I should have more time to be with her next week. I’d really like to spend some time with each of them before #3 comes. Sometimes it’s just too convenient that they are at a stage where they play so well together. It’s easy to work on one more thing from the “Do before baby #3 comes” list while they play together in their room. I hope I can find the right balance in these next 5 weeks or so.

In the meantime, they have already made their reservations made for a long weekend at Grammy and Granddad’s house. That will be another nice break for us! But I plan to do my best to enjoy them until then!
