Take a Test Drive…

Keep the Car. Get OpenOffice.org

Microsoft is allowing users to download a test drive of Office 2007. (But of course you can’t keep it forever.) OpenOffice.org wants to get the word out that you can take their test drive AND keep the car. Forever. Just like always. Completely free. No strings attached.

We’ve been trying OpenOffice for a few months now, although MS Office is still installed on our machines. I did have to go back to Microsoft’s product once to print some labels that OpenOffice didn’t seem to be handling correctly. For everything else we’ve needed, OpenOffice seems to be doing the job just fine. So give it a try if you want. And while you’re at it, download Firefox too. Tabbed browsing is just simply THE way to go.

All Gone

Well, George informed me today that our former place of employment has now removed the “Remember PIN” option from their website for security reasons. Yours truly wrote the code that made that functionality work. Okay, so it only took 4 lines of code to make it work. And technically it wasn’t my code anymore since everything had to be rewritten when they changed from a Microsoft platform to IBM. But I was still the one to originally write it!

The only other real programming project I worked on was gone several years ago when they decided to no longer offer the product. SO that means that everything I ever did for the company is now officially gone. Oh well, they still paid me quite a lot of money for the amount of work they actually gave me. (Not many employees beg their managers weekly for SOMETHING to do. Please, ANYTHING!)

I do still enjoy programming and have a desire to use those skills again some day, but it just doesn’t make any sense to do so right now. I don’t think there will be much “spare time” for me around our house when Baby #3 makes his/her appearance in 6 more weeks or so. (Wow, is it really only 6 weeks away? Yikes!)

Who says you have to wait till the weekend to grill?

mmmmmm....

Some days I just feel like grillin’. Can’t explain it, don’t really want to try and curtail it. All I know is, the result is generally happy customers.

My sister posted a pretty funny video from her side of the world today.

Expensive Pants

posted June 19th, 2006 by Shannon

Some days I enjoy cloth diapering – other days it’s not so great. I just purchased some cloth training pants for Mr. Nate. Entering my credit card number made for a not-so-great cloth-diapering day. I can’t believe I just paid that much for only *3* pairs of training pants. I’ll just have to remind myself that Pull-ups ain’t cheap either!

Sunday Afternoon

George just took the kids for a ride in the bike trailer. Then went to check out the “lake” on the south side of our subdivision. The pregnant mommy stayed home. Bikes and my body don’t agree with each other very well at this stage. But I am anxiously awaiting a full report on the “lake”.

In the meantime, I spent a while in the kid’s room putting some toys away. Not picking them up for them, putting them AWAY for a while. I’ve found that the most effective way to help my kids keep their room cleaner is to give them less toys to play with. So, the Lincoln Logs were put away along with 2/3rd of the items in the Little People bucket, the doll clothes “corner”, and the balls/cars basket. Hopefully someday soon they will learn to (a) pick out the pieces they want to play with instead of dumping the whole bucket/basket out, (b) stop throwing things off the loft, and (c) use words to help convince the other (usually younger) sibling that doing items (a) and (b) is a bad idea that will result in a longer pick-up time for both of them! Otherwise they have been playing very well together on their own. It’s a lot of fun to walk by and see them enjoying each other’s company. And for the most part they have done a decent job about only having 1-2 things out at a time. It’s just that when all of any one item is just dumped onto the floor, it covers their entire floor space. Add all of a second item being dumped on the floor and it’s a disaster.

Speaking of toys…the remaining ballet clothes have been found. Along with the kid’s puzzles and the diaper bag and clothes for Emily’s dolls. I was glad to find them, although most of them will stay in the top of the closet for now.

Well, Happy Father’s Day to the dads out there!

Aunt and Uncle Visit

posted June 16th, 2006 by Shannon

I meant to get this photo posted earlier this week. My sister and her husband dropped by our new place and spent the night while they were in the area this past weekend. We walked to the school playground the next morning and played with Uncle Cody’s cool yellow plane. Thanks for the visit, Britney and Cody!!

We have now located and plugged in the necessary equipment to post pics to our blog. I added several posts and dated them when they actually should have been written. The post on May 24 is the earliest one I added tonight.

Mystery Object

The previous owners left us quite a collection of random items. Not the least of which was this lovely treasure.

We were stressed at the time … we laughed … laughter is good for stress.

One Week

posted June 7th, 2006 by Shannon

It’s been a little over a week since we’ve been in the new house. Thanks to my mom, it’s MUCH cleaner than it was when we moved in. Thanks to all our relatives that helped out this past weekend, we have a good start on all those little to-do projects that never end. Most of our things are out of boxes now, but there’s still a lot to do to get it all organized. There’s enough room to store everything we need here, it’s just going to have to be stored in different spots than it was in the old house. And that’s just going to take some time to figure out.

We’ll also trying to figure out a solution for a desk in the office. We tried looking at both new and used office furniture yesterday, but it looks like George will get to custom-build a desk for us after all.

In the meantime, Emily reminded me this morning that she can’t find her ballerina clothes. I remember packing them someplace “special” so they wouldn’t get lost in the move……..
